Above Ground Pool Decks Atlanta

A deck turns an above ground pool into part of the yard: an easy way in and out, a place to sit, and a gate you can lock. We build freestanding decks set to your pool's height.

Decks for above ground pools

Most above ground pools are about four feet tall. Without a deck, the only way in is a ladder, and there is nowhere to sit or set anything down. A deck at the right height makes the pool easier and safer to use.

A pool deck is still a deck, with the same footings, framing, railings, and stairs as any other. What changes is the planning around the pool: the height of the top rail, the gap to the pool wall, access to equipment, and a barrier that keeps children out when no one is watching.

We build pool decks across Atlanta in pressure-treated wood and composite decking.

What goes into it

Planning an above ground pool deck

Freestanding frame

The deck carries its own weight on its own footings and posts. Nothing bears on the pool wall, and the frame stays clear of the pool base.

The right height

The deck surface is set just below the pool's top rail, so stepping in and out is comfortable and the rail is not damaged by foot traffic.

Gates and barriers

Pool rules generally require a barrier around the pool. On a deck, that usually means railings at barrier height and a self-closing, self-latching gate at the top of the stairs.

Equipment access

We leave room to reach the pump, filter, skimmer, and hoses, and keep the deck clear of the pool's electrical connections.

Board choice near water

Composite boards will not splinter and shrug off splashing. Wood is cooler underfoot and costs less. We help you weigh the trade-offs for your yard.

Layout options

A small platform at the entry, a partial deck along one side, or a full wrap-around. Each changes cost, footing count, and how the yard works.

Permits and safety

Pool barrier rules and permits

Georgia's state minimum codes include the 2018 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code, which sets barrier rules for residential pools. Key requirements include:

  • A barrier at least 48 inches above grade around the pool
  • No opening in the barrier that a 4-inch sphere can pass through
  • Gates that open outward, away from the pool, and are self-closing and self-latching
  • A latch release below 54 inches mounted on the pool side, at least 3 inches below the top of the gate
  • Pool ladders or steps that can be secured, locked, or removed, unless they sit inside a compliant barrier

Local amendments and permit steps vary between Atlanta, nearby cities, and the counties, so we confirm them with your permit office before we design. Electrical work around a pool should be done by a licensed electrician.

Layouts

Partial, wrap-around, or platform deck?

A platform deck covers the pool entry with a few square feet to stand on, a gated stair, and a ladder or steps into the water. It is the most affordable option and works well for smaller pools.

A partial deck runs along one side of the pool, with room for chairs and a small table. It is the most common choice because it gives usable space without surrounding the whole pool.

A wrap-around deck goes all the way around the pool. It looks the most finished and gives the most room, but it costs the most and needs a plan for reaching equipment and the pool liner later.

Common questions

Above ground pool deck questions

Can the deck be attached to my above ground pool?

We build it to stand on its own footings and framing, with a small gap from the pool wall, so the deck's weight never rests on the pool. Pool walls are not designed to carry a deck, and your pool manufacturer's instructions should be followed for anything that touches the pool.

Do I need a permit for an above ground pool deck?

Usually, yes. A deck around a pool generally needs a building permit, and the pool area needs a barrier that meets local pool rules. The rules depend on your city or county, so we confirm them before we design.

Is wood or composite better next to a pool?

Both work. Composite and PVC boards will not splinter and need less upkeep around water, but some darker colors get hot in full sun. Pressure-treated wood costs less and stays cooler, but needs regular sealing. The frame underneath is pressure-treated either way.

Can you build a deck around a pool that is already installed?

Yes. We measure the pool, plan footings so they do not disturb the pool base, and leave access to the pump, filter, and any service panels. If the pool is going in at the same time, we coordinate with the installer.
